Operation Beacon -The Springfield Experience
At Springfield Secondary, service to the community
is always an exciting adventure. Students team up
with disadvantaged or physically disabled adults
to scale new heights, whether it is at Mount Kinabalu
or on lower ground in Chiangmai. They train and
prepare their fellow adventurers before each trip,
taking care to nurture the latter's sense of belonging
and self-esteem.
The students have the support of the National Youth
Council, the Lee Foundation and the School Advisory
Committee. Like a beacon that sends out light, the
Springfield project touches not just the handicapped
at home, but also reaches out to the less fortunate
in other lands. The students helped to improve the
community facilities of a hill tribe in Thailand.
The exposure to another culture has broadened the
students' perspective of life and they have returned
with a deep sense of satisfaction, enriched in many
ways and re-charged in their spirit.
