The Henry Park Parent Association's 'Discussion List' is all abuzz. It is open to all parents (members) of the association and is the place to be for 150 parents who enjoy a lively discussion on school issues and concerns. That they may be miles away from one another does not make their discussion on-line less enjoyable or less illuminating than if they were all in the same room. Usually parents are observed by a Head of Department who makes no attempt to intervene even when the exchange of views gets intense. 'Discussion List' puts them in touch with other parents and keeps the line of communication to the school open.
Ever since the Principal learnt that 95% of his students have e-mail facilities at home, he has used this avenue for establishing links with parents. Every morning he makes time to read his e-mail and then responds to every parent who contacts him. The outcome is that he spends less time on the telephone than before. The Principal can address the parents' concerns in his own time, and consult with teachers before responding to parents. Complaints from parents have reduced while compliments have increased.
